About The Club

The New England 65-Plus Runners club is a unique club in that one need only be within six months of his or her 65th birthday to join. We are an organization of active senior athletes from all areas of New England and beyond.

The main purpose of the club is to achieve greater recognition for the growing group of senior athletes. The club encourages race directors and sponsors to include age categories in their events at least up to 70 years of age. Prior to the organization of the club most athletic events failed to have age categories beyond 50- not much of a competitive edge for the senior athlete. The club has made great strides in this endeavor. More than 95% of athletic events in New England now include age divisions of 60, 70 and even 80. We participate in many athletic events, from community athletic events to major marathons and state and national senior games.

The membership of this unique group of seniors continues to grow. The club was organized in 1991 with only nine members. Today we are moving closer to 600. The ages range from 64 1/2 to 96. The average age is 72. We have many active members in their 80’s and a few in their 90’s.

To join, an applicant is usually recommended by a club member. However, the membership is open to all that meet the age requirement without regard to their gender or athletic ability. We have some of the top age-group athletes in the country as well as many “back-of-the-pack” athletes of which we are equally proud.

The lifetime membership fee is $35, and there are no annual dues. However, we do have a yearly voluntary fund drive to supplement the financial support we receive from our sponsors: Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Fox Sports Net. Our major expense is the publication of a quarterly newsletter. We manage to meet our financial obligations thanks to our generous sponsors and the generosity of our membership.

Since our members are from all the New England States and beyond, we do not have regular meetings. We meet by chance at athletic events and recognize each other by our club singlet. However, we do have a fellowship luncheon once a year that many of our members attend, some of them traveling longs distances.
